Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve

The Kerry International Dark-Sky Reserve has been designated Ireland’s FIRST International Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark-Sky Association (, one of only 3 GOLD TIER Reserves on the planet, and the only GOLD TIER Reserve in the Northern Hemisphere.

This means that on clear nights the sky in this South West region of Ireland is simply stunning, with many astronomical sights seen through the naked eye as can be seen say in the Grand Canyon or the desert plains of Africa. Constellations can be viewed here with many more stars than are shown on the usual sky maps. The beautiful band of the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy, Star Clusters and Nebula’s are just some of the naked eye wonders to see without the aid of any astronomical equipment or filters.

The Waterville Trailrunning Festival is a series of trail races over 3 days, along the Lough Currane/Derrynane loop of the Kerry Way, on the Atlantic tip of the Iveragh Peninsula.

Covering some of the most scenic sections of the Kerry Way in Waterville, Derrynane and the surrounding areas.

The WTF Ultra Stage Race and the WTF Ultra Marathon races looped course will travel through Derrynane Beach right down at sea level up to the highest point on the Kerry Way at Eagle's Hill and back around Lough Currane. A fully way marked route including rough mountainside, single track and tarred road. Stunning area of natural beauty, including majestic sea views, rugged mountain passes and foothills, lake and island vistas, and a fantastic 5km ridge run offering unparalleled views across Ballinskelligs Bay and of the Skelligs.
